Survey on child labour

The government conducted a survey of child labour in South Africa in 1999, and wrote a report in 2000.

The report says that:
  a.  One in every three children in South Africa        was involved in child labour.
  b.  At least one million children spend eight        hours each week fetching wood and water.

  c.  1.3 million children spend 5 hours every week cleaning their schools.
  d.  Nearly half a million children (551 000) work each week to earn some        money.
  e.  Working children are also exposed to dangerous work, which can cause them        harm or injuries.  Some work in hot, dusty or dark conditions. Many do        heavy physical work.

The Network Against Child Labour is made up of volunteers who want to stop child labour in South Africa. We hope the government’s report will be distributed soon. We hope that we can hold meetings to discuss what the government should do next. We will get many experts to help us in this work. Once we have gathered our ideas, we hope to discuss them in all mine provinces with the government, parents and children. From these discussions we hope to be able to tell the government what the people want.
